Grey Nurse Shark Conservation
The Australian East Coast population of Grey Nurse Sharks is critically endangered, possibly with as few as 500 sharks. Current predictions are that the population may become quasi-extinct (less than 50 females) in less than 10 years. This means these animals will become extinct within our lifetime. While some legislative efforts attempt to make a difference to the decline in Grey Nurse Shark abundance, action to protect Grey Nurse Sharks, as well as the marine environment, must be intensified.
One of the major barriers to increased protection of sharks is the public concern about sharks as killers, and the lack of understanding of just how serious the plight of the Grey Nurse Shark is. The best way to counter these concerns is to increase awareness of sharks in general, the Grey Nurse Shark in particular, and what people can do to protect Grey Nurse Sharks and the marine environment. We know what measures are needed to prevent Grey Nurse Sharks from extinction on the east coast of Australia. What is also needed is sufficient public support for these measures.
Below, you'll find a link to the Recovery Plan for the Grey Nurse Shark. This document mentions the devestating impacts of the NSW and Qld Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program. For more info on this program and its impacts on marine life, click on the link below to RemoveSharkNets.com.
